Is your little one a shaker and a mover? A singer and dancer? A HAM?!! Then this is the class for them! In this class your child will get a little taste of everything dance and theatre. Children will be introduced to it all from ballet to break dancing, Singing to acting and improvisation.
We, at I Can Do That, believe in the arts as a way to give kids the ability to express themselves, work on listening and following directions and explore their imaginations in all things artistic. This is the perfect launching pad to fuel their curiosity in the arts. An emphasis will be placed on body awareness, confidence building, self-expression and learning the fundamentals of dance and theater in a warm, fun, and exploratory environment. You probably don't know this but our very own Melissa Swender (the Teacher) started as a Ballet dancer. She danced with the Houston Ballet as a teenager and made her professional Ballet debut in the NATIONAL TOUR OF THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA playing Meg the lead ballet corps dancer. Melissa is so excited to teach Ballet and introduce kids to fundamentals and fun of Ballet. This class will focus on the basic fundamentals of Ballet and increasing body awareness. A big part of the class will be in “expressing yourself through dance”, where kids will use the steps they’ve learned to “dance how they feel.” A perfect class for kids working on self-confidence, balance, self-expression and musicality in a fun, safe environment.
"Singing and Acting for the Stage"
Does your child love to sing and spontaneously break out into song and dance? Do they love to act, dress up and create characters? This is the class for them!
In this Musical Theatre class a special emphasis is placed on singing and acting. With the guidance of a Broadway Pro, students will be introduced to a different Broadway musical or animated film each week and learn songs and scenes from these shows. They will learn to break down a song, understand what the song is about and begin to understand telling a story through song. They will also learn to break down scenes, develop original characters and even participate in writing and creating their own monologues and/or scenes. Broadway musicals and movies may include Hamilton, SpongeBob, Newsies, Moana, Frozen, Matilda, Finding Neverland, Mary Poppins, Aladdin, Annie, School of Rock, Charlie Brown, etc. They will also participate in theater games, learn improvisation, and may learn light choreography to go with their song and scenes. This is a must for any theatre lover, dancer or singer! A strong focus is placed on confidence building and allowing children to be fully self expressed in a safe, fun and supportive environment. The semester ends with a fun performance of the best moments from the class.
**PLEASE NOTE: We have live accompaniment in many classes. Your kids are working with a musician who plays, reads and teaches music in addition to their regular teacher.
**We periodically try to bring in special guests from a current Broadway show.
Does your child love to sing, dance AND perform? Has he or she already learned the entire soundtrack to HAMILTON, MOANA and ANNIE?! This is the class for your child! Each week a Broadway professional will introduce your child to a different Broadway musical! Students will be taught choreography inspired by current and past Broadway musicals that may include Matilda, Finding Neverland, Mary Poppins, Aladdin, School of Rock, Annie, etc. They will also participate in theater games, learn improvisation, and sing songs inspired by these great kid-friendly musicals. This is a must for any theatre lover, dancer or singer! The semester ends with a fun performance of the best moments from the class.

HIP HOP/JAZZ COMBO
If your child loves to moonwalk like Michael Jackson, pop and lock like the Jabberwockies or Jump, turn and twirl like the next great Broadway dancer, then this is the class for them. Each week kids will get their groove on as they learn a wide range of hip hop and jazz dance styles including breaking, popping, theatre dance and and the fundamentals of Jazz dance. Each class begins with a warm up to introduce kids to the concept of properly preparing their body for anything and then a combination will be taught by their Hip Hop Pro! We pride ourselves on teachers that are working professionals and know what's going on in the dance world right now. Great fun for your budding Hip Hopper OR the kid that just loves to dance! For Girls and Boys!! All levels encouraged!
A more advanced sampling of everything dance and theatre.
Kids will be introduced to actual choreography from Broadway shows and Movie Musicals, as well as original choreography from their teachers. Many styles of dance will be covered through the semester including Hip Hop, Jazz, Broadway, Ballet, Tap and even some Ballroom. Acting and improvisation will explore more exciting and rewarding levels that explore character development, scene study and improvistion. A continued emphasis on body awareness, confidence building, self expression in a fun, and exploratory environment.
LET'S PUT ON A SHOW!
Kids have awesome imaginations and we love to fuel that creativity.
In this class or camp students will have the opportunity to learn everything about putting on a show from start to finish. Together with a Broadway veteran your child will write, dance, sing and perform in an ACTUAL MINI PRODUCTION OF A MUSICAL (shows may include FIDDLER ON THE ROOF, GUYS AND DOLLS, ANNIE, ETC.) OR they work to together with their classmates to CREATE AN ORIGINAL MUSICAL! From conception to performance your child will do it all. They will even make their own props and choose their own costumes (from their closet!). This is great fun for any theatre lover with their own idea of what should be on BROADWAY!!
